The United Islands Reloaded Series Starts with NoJazz, the Discovery of 2008
The United Islands festival is starting a series of concerts in May to remember some of the successful participants of the past years of the event. The first part of the United Islands Reloaded will present the popular French band of noJazz, appearing in the Lucerna Music Bar on May 27, 2010. The ensemble will be presenting their latest CD “Zooland” which was released in December 2009. The support band for noJazz will be Segundo, which appeared in Kampa in the last year.
NoJazz is a Paris quintet that combines jazz with some elements of funky, electro, and world music. The band was formed in 2000, when the founding five members met; building on their experience from other projects, they were looking for something new to broaden their musical horizons. One of the reports in the quality paper Le Monde asked the question: “Is noJazz the future of jazz music?” To tell the truth, the basic concept of the band is quite straight-forward: mix the noble spirit of jazz with hypnotic rhythms and modern sound. Acoustic and jungle, trip hop and trumpets, funky and jazz jauntily mixed with drum’n’bass, that is what noJazz is about. They have appeared in over 40 countries, in clubs and festivals. Their live performance is a fantastic expression of energy and rhythm where the magic of Miles Davis meets that of Frank Zappa to result in an exceptional music experience.
The supporting band will be Prague’s Segundo which appeared at the Radio 1 Jazz stage last year. They call themselves a “Live Punk Jungle Band”, and, in fact, they are right although nearly all parts of the name come with a comment. They really play “live”, but their instruments include samplers. The “punk” element is the three-member arrangement, but in this case, the rhythm section is complemented with saxophones of all possible size and pitch, instead of the guitar. The word “jungle” does not reflect the typical beats; it is used with its original notion to describe a true jungle of all possible styles, sounds and rhythms, all focused on a single goal: get a good number on the stage. What about the “band”? Well, we don’t need any of that intellectual talk here. Segundo really are a band.

United Islands Reloaded is a series of concerts where Prague’s clubs host a selection of the best performers from the past years of the United Islands festival. United Islands is the biggest multi-genre music event organized in the historic downtown of Prague; this year it is held between June 24 and 26.
